The Fuji Finepix S1000fd is a 10 megapixel super zoom camera with a 12x optical zoom lens.

Why Buy the Fuji Finepix S1000FD?

The Finepix S1000fd is that bit cheaper than most super zoom models. A large part of the reason for this is that it has a shorter zoom and one or two less features than some of its competitors. The upside of the Finepix S1000fd not having every bell and whistle is that it helps to make the camera that bit easier to use.

Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)

The Finepix S1000fd handles the colours and darker areas of the photos well. I am impressed with the definition showing on the name of one of the boats in the centre of the photo. Sharpness is good too. Some detail is lost from the brightest areas of the shot where the sun falls on the boat.

Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)

Focusing is roughly in line with most other digital cameras in this shot. In terms of focusing this is the toughest test I run. The more distant parts of the scene are softer, but the majority of the shot is sharp enough. I would like to have seen greater brightness in the shot.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)

There is a strong turquoise fringing showing in this shot. It is true that all super zooms have this problem (or more commonly purple fringing) to a degree, but this photo suggests the Finepix S1000fd suffers more than most others. This problem occurs in bright conditions, with light coloured subjects in the shot. It is likely that the problem will be evident even in smaller prints.

With the lens fully extended focusing levels are softer than average.

Outdoor 4 (Building)

This is another photo I would like to have seen a touch lighter. In the shaded areas there is a loss of definition in the photo. In the brighter sections the photo is much sharper than when the zoom lens was fully extended.

Outdoor Portrait

Working much closer to the subject makes for a sharply focused photo. The colours are quite strong, but they do lend a lot of warmth to the photo. I have used a white balance setting of shady to add some extra punch to the colours in the shot.

Indoor Portrait with Flash

The pop up flash unit produces plenty of brightness. This is a sharp photo. Perhaps some extra warmth in the skin tones would have improved the photo further.

Indoor Portrait without Flash

Using the natural lighting available the Finepix S1000fd manages to produce a light, bright photo. This works well for the darker areas of the hair. Noise is controlled well in the shot.

Colours

There is plenty of colour in my test shots, without the camera going over the top. With strong blues and greens this should help to produce colourful landscapes.

Macro

In super macro mode the Finepix S1000fd is able to get in very close to the subject. This helps to deliver a bright, clear photo with good level of detail. In fact this macro shot stands up very well against other similar digital cameras.

ISO 400 and ISO 1600

Fuji digital cameras tend to handle higher ISO settings as well as or better than other brands. That is the case with the Finepix S1000fd. Although noise is still apparent in the darker or more shaded areas of the shots the camera controls noise levels better than most cameras manage.

Overall

I am happy enough with the Finepix S1000fd. Ironically the one problem shot is the one where the zoom is fully extended. This after all is the key test photo for this camera. I also found some of my test photos a little dark.

Shutter Lag

Taking a single photo with the Finepix S1000fd clocked a reasonable time of 0.42 seconds. All my other tests produced slow times. Five photos took 19.63 seconds, a photo with flash 1.68 seconds and five photos with flash 20.47 seconds.

It took 3.08 seconds to turn the camera on and take a photo.

Style: The Finepix S1000fd is small for a super zoom camera. Like most of its competitors it has been modeled on a digital SLR.

Memory cards: 24mb of storage are available to get you started with the Finepix S1000fd. I was able to store 11 photos before the memory was full. To increase the capacity if the memory card you can use xD, SD and SDHC cards.

Ease of use rating:Above Average. With the extra manual features the Finepix S1000fd is not as easy to pick up and get going with as a more straightforward point and shoot camera. The reason it earns an above average Ease of Use Rating is that compared to other, similar cameras you are likely to get to grips with it that bit quicker.

Alternatives

If you would like to try a super zoom digital camera with a longer lens, better overall picture quality and one or two extra features try the Nikon Coolpix P80.

Verdict:

The Fuji Finepix S1000fd does most things well enough, apart from taking photos with the zoom fully extended. It is as easy to use as any super zoom camera and is also relatively compact.

Well that is the question that many consumers as themselves. I am making a large purchase, do I want to get a wide screen or a traditional aspect screen. Here are a few things to consider when choosing to buy a widescreen HDTV, a traditional aspect HDTV or regular TV.

Older Analog TVs versus HDTV. Older era televisions are analog televisions unless they have a digital receiver built into them. In February 2009, all television broadcast stations will be required to broadcast in digital. This means analog televisions without digital tuners will be unusable unless they are hooked up to satellite or cable. These are not a good choice to buy. Move along down the row to HD enabled televisions. Luckily enough, all television equipment sold after May 25, 2007 must either contain a digital tuner or be identified at the point of sale as not having one.

LCD or Plasma. HDTV comes in multiple types that can vastly affect price. The liquid crystal display (LCD) type of HDTV dominates the consumer market in small-size to mid-size and is typically cheaper. Plasma television models dominate the consumer market in large-size models. This consideration is generally not an issue when deciding between a wide screen and a traditional aspect. What is a consideration is life expectancy and cost. A widescreen has more visual area that can “burn out.”

Flat Panel Television versus Rear/Front Projection Television. HDTV designs that are plasma or LCD are generally found in the flat panel design. However, you can still find rear projection and front projection HDTVs sold for home theatre systems. In general a wide-screen version will add considerably to the requirements for room size, the total shelf weight and moving restrictions are your overall consideration when making this selection. Unless you have a dedicated home theatre room and plan on never moving again, it’s generally suggested to stay away from Rear or Front Projection wide-screen television.

Widescreen for TV Broadcasts and Movies. Over 90 percent of all broadcasts are in traditional aspect. Most are not in widescreen formatting or have been pre-formatted coming from the broadcaster to fit traditional aspects. If you mostly watch regular television broadcasts and do not routinely use a service provider that has widescreen broadcasts or movies using widescreen aspects, then widescreen is not for you.

Using your Widescreen for Gaming. The beauty of current of having a widescreen for computer gaming is the ability to use the split screen option on many different games without feeling crushed. This is especially true on many First Person Shooter games. If you are an avid gamer, a widescreen HDTV will only enhance your game experience.

Using your HDTV for Work. Here is another example of where the widescreen really can assist the consumer. Some HDTVs are enabled to accept input from computers and can be used as a monitor for your work. You can often get two or three documents on your desktop and view them much easier with a widescreen than on a traditional aspect. If you use your HDTV as both a television and monitor, here is where it can pay off in many ways.

For most consumers, the widescreen HDTVs are the way to go with very little drawback. Unless you are only watching sitcoms or are setting up a home theatre in a small confined space, they are the most versatile aspect. You can watch both traditional aspect and get the full widescreen aspect on the same set of equipment. They are more useful than traditional aspect HDTVs as they can provide additional workspace and even a greater gaming experience.

The Olympus SP-570 is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 20x optical zoom lens. This is the longest lens currently available on a consumer digital camera.

Why Buy the Olympus SP-570?

I guess I’m stating the obvious when I say the main attraction of the SP-570 is the long zoom lens. This length of zoom usually comes in handy for wildlife and sporting subjects. In addition to the length of the lens, the camera also has manual exposure controls. For anyone who is use to handing an SLR camera you may be interested to hear that the lens is zoomed in and out by twisting the lens barrel rather than the more typical method of pushing buttons on the back of the camera.

As you would expect with a lens this size, the SP-570 offers image stabilisation. The lens has a focal length equivalent to 26 – 520mm in 35mm format. This makes the lens wide angle and makes it ideal for shooting wide scenes, such as landscapes. The camera also comes with a set of manual exposure controls. Therefore this camera is a good choice for someone who sees photography as a hobby.

Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)

The SP-570 certainly handles the lighter colours well in this shot with plenty of detail showing in the boats and also in the white wooden slats under the roof of the building.

There is also impressive levels of detail showing in the in some of the more lightly shaded areas. Focusing is sharp with the brickwork of the building standing out well.

Colours have a gentler feel to them than many of the digital cameras I have tested recently.

Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)

This is another fair effort. Sharpness stands up well considering the distance between the camera and the scene. You can also see the benefit of the wide angle lens with plenty of the scene showing in the shot.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)

With the lens zoomed into to its maximum capacity purple fringing becomes quite evident. This will be more of a problem when taking photos with light coloured objects in the scene, such as the boats in the test shot. As with many cameras, offering extreme length of lens focusing loses some of its sharpness when the lens is fully extended.

Outdoor 4 (Building)

In this test shot the SP-570 copes well with the scene. As I would expect the picture is sharper and the camera has no problem focusing on the brickwork of the building.

Outdoor Portrait

There are no problems with sharpness or colour in this shot. If you find the result is darker in the shadows than you would like then you can try using flash to lighten these areas.

Indoor Portrait with Flash

This is another sharply focused effort. The flash is quite powerful and shows quite clearly on areas of the face.

Indoor Portrait without Flash

For me this is the most impressive photo out of all my test shots. The SP-570 is able to use the available light to produce a natural looking shot. Brightness and definition are better than the vast majority of cameras are able to manage. This is one of the benefits of working with a camera that has a large sized lens.

Colours

In most cases, the colours produced by this Olympus digital camera are calmer and less vivid than most other brands produce. There are instances where I would like to have seen more punch to the colours, but this is a matter of personal taste.

Macro

This is another shot where I am impressed by the amount of brightness the camera is able to show in the photo. Levels of detail are good without quite being top drawer. A touch of purple fringing also shows where the light catches the edge of the watch.

ISO 400 and ISO 1600

My test shots at both ISO 400 and ISO 1600 show fairly typical levels of noise. If you push ISO above these levels, it really becomes a serious problem.

Overall

Overall I’m pretty happy. Picture quality impressed me in most situations.

Shutter Lag

A single photo took 0.52 seconds with five taking 12.23 seconds. Turning the flash on increased the times to 1.35 seconds for a single photo and 14.59 seconds for five. I would like to have seen faster times for all of the tests.

It took the camera 3.05 seconds to turn on and capture the first photo.

Style: The SP-570 has as much of an SLR like feel than any other compact digital camera I can remember testing. It has a very solid feel in the hand and looks like a compact SLR. It is available in black.

Ease of use rating: Good. To get the most out of thisOlympus digital camera you will need to spend plenty of time working with the camera and getting used to all the controls the camera offers. Olympus has done a good job in placing various controls at your fingertips. There is a control dial on top of the camera and dedicated buttons for focus and exposure lock, continuous shooting and a switch to select manual or automatic focusing.

Alternatives

Although there are an increasing number of longer and longer lenses on the market, the longest lenses I have tested before the SP-570 have 18x zoom lenses. One camera I would suggest checking out is the Nikon Coolpix P80.

Verdict:

The Olympus SP-570 handles more like a Digital SLR than any other camera I have tested. I like the barrel twisting method of zoom. Add in a hot shoe, RAW mode and various manual controls and you have a very good camera for a photography enthusiast.

In this article, we’re going to review the Pentax K10D SLR Camera .The Pentax K10D SLR Camera is a 10.2 mega pixel camera KAF2 and supports SD memory(18-55mm lens kit).

The Pentax K10D SLR Camera is a bulky camera which features both a top LCD and rear screen LCD. It is at home in a number of environments. Colours are punchy and reds vibrant, without any overbearing saturation the white balance was slightly to orange, but not so much as as to be distracting. When taking sports images the level of focus was reliable. Being able to switch from the standard multi-zone focus mode back to centre focus is extremely useful and the continuous Autofocus mode is reliably rapid. The colours were eye catching, without making the background to overbearing.

The Pentax K10D SLR Camera has handy extras in the menu system such as the landscape-friendly bulb model.The camera is more backward compatible than any DSLR that allows the enthusiast to dig into 25 million lenses that Pentax has made since the early 70’s.

The Pentax K10D has a protective weatherproof body to help prevent various unwanted elements infiltrating the body.

Being a heavy weight model without over-reliance on menu screens, the Pentax K10D SLR Camera will certainly find a home amongst the more savvy consumers. It isn’t as user friendly as some of the competitions but a a great camera nonetheless for more experienced users.
