Choosing Your First Digital Camera

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008
Digital cameras are no longer a luxury these days, with high resolution mega pixels and sophisticated features coming within a very appealing price range. And thanks to many comprehensive digital camera reviews, it’s easy to pick the most sought after features and qualities and still stay within a budget.

Most people turn to digital photography because they like the ease of printing and sharing the photos on the web. Business owners choose the digital quality for their product catalogues or brochures, students employ digital cameras for their projects and with digital cameras in most recent cell phones, even a child can take a snap and publish it instantly on the web. And thanks to the newest lens and zooming qualities, you don’t have to be a seasoned pro to shoot close-to-professional images with modern digital cameras.

You can hardly find a digital camera today with resolution lower than 2 megapixels – two million color dots per picture. This is a decent quality for most uses, including printing the photos for the home or school use. The higher the megapixel rate, the bigger photos you can print without sacrificing the quality. However, if you are not a professional photographer or a graphic professional who deals with upscale images all the time, you don’t really need a digital camera that produces more than 8-megapixel camera – and these rarely become available for less than $1000. Plus, if you seek to print large detailed photos, make sure you have a high-quality printer that can reproduces all the tiny details that make a difference.

When you pick a digital camera, you should also pay attention to the zoom number. Digital cameras have two different kinds of zoom. Digital zoom enlarges all pixels digitally, while optical zoom enlarges the image with the lens magnification. Since you can always enlarge the image later, on the computer using the Photoshop or other image manipulation program, you would be better to concentrate on higher optical zoom rate. The average optical zoom for midlevel digital cameras is 2 to 4x.

There are a few other options to consider: whether a digital camera uses a rechargeable batteries (zoom and LCD screen consume a lot of energy); whether the digital camera has a standard flash memory (you may need to buy a few more flash memory cards in future), and if the menus are easy to understand. If you travel a lot, you may want a digital camera that is lightweight and compact.

Even if you decide to pick the least expensive digital camera to serve your basic photography needs, you will still enjoy all the benefits of digital photography: no film rolls to buy, no wasted photos to dispose of and best of all, no waiting time to get them printed. New models of digital cameras are constantly launched, and the older ones are becoming less expensive day by day. Know your priorities, check the most recent digital camera reviews, and there should be a digital camera to perfectly suit your needs.

Improvements and Innovations of the Next Generation 15 Inch Macbook Pro

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008
Ben T Wilson asked:

Unibody

The MacBook Pro boasts Apple’s new Mac computer design concept: the unibody. The unibody is a laptop casing manufactured with incredible precision from a block of aluminium. The result is not only a laptop that looks fantastic with its brushed finish and smooth edges; it’s also more than capable of absorbing the rough and tumble of life on the move.

Furthermore, the unibody has enabled Apple to make the MacBook Pro lighter and thinner. This powerful, feature-packed laptop now weighs just 2.49 kg (5.5 pounds), and at its thickest point is 2.41 cm (0.95 inch).

The monitor

The MacBook Pro’s 15.4 inch monitor is still an LED backlit glossy widescreen with 1,440 x 900 pixel resolution. The fact that these specs haven’t changed is certainly no cause for concern because the quality is first-rate. Apple has managed to enhance it, however, with a glass front that stretches across the whole of the interior surface and does away with a metal frame. The glass looks better, is tougher and lasts longer. It’s also free from arsenic, a toxin released when glass is recycled.

Multi-Touch trackpad

Another striking feature of the MacBook Pro is the larger, more versatile trackpad. The smooth etched glass of the trackpad now has a surface area 39% greater than before. This gives you plenty of room for your fingers to make every trackpad signal.

These signals have also developed, and now incorporate some useful extras. Apple has introduced a four finger swipe, for example, that takes full advantage of the trackpad’s size increase. Swipe four fingers to the right or left, and you trigger Application Switcher. This allows you to view all your open applications. Swipe four fingers up or down, and you prompt Exposé to show desktop or all your open windows.

If you’re more used to right-hand clicking, the trackpad gives you the chance to do this by tapping with two fingers. It’s also possible to arrange for the trackpad to give you a specific right-hand click zone.

Current Mac owners will spot the lack of a button lying along the bottom of the trackpad. Apple has replaced this by simply turning the whole trackpad into a button. In other words, you can click the trackpad anywhere on its surface.

Mini DisplayPort

The new Mini DisplayPort connector on the MacBook Pro is a tenth of the size of a normal DVI port. It provides a fast, no-nonsense method of connecting the 24 inch Apple Cinema Display, or peripherals such as projection systems. Various Mini DisplayPort adaptors also enable you to connect VGA, DVI, and dual-link DVI monitors.

Cinema Display

Apple’s 24 inch LED backlit Cinema Display is the perfect complement to the new MacBook Pro. It’s just what you need if you’re making a presentation, or you just want the advantages conferred by a larger screen. Apple has also designed the Cinema Display so that you can connect and use the MacBook Pro as simply as possible. Similarly, you can disconnect with ease and walk away with the MacBook Pro at short notice.

The Cinema Display’s cable, for instance, branches into three connectors. One of these goes into the new MacBook Pro’s Mini DisplayPort; another plugs into a USB port; and the third is a MagSafe that you connect to the MacBook Pro’s Power Port. In other words, you can display your images on both the MacBook Pro and the Cinema Display; use the Cinema Display’s iSight camera, microphone, and speakers; and charge the MacBook Pro via an adaptor built into the Cinema Display.

NVIDIA graphics

Apple has teamed up with NVIDIA to produce an integrated graphics processor that’s ideal for professional applications and advanced games. The NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor comes with dual-link DVI support and, for the 2.4GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro, has 256MB of GDDR3 memory. The memory capacity doubles to 512MB on the 2.53GHz and 2.8GHz MacBook Pro models.

This isn’t the only graphics processor in the new MacBook Pro, however. Recognising that users will sometimes require less intensive power, Apple also installs the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with the main memory. This means you can save battery power by opting for the 9400M whenever you’re working on your day-to-day applications.

Storage

Storage on the new MacBook Pro has increased to 250GB on the 2.4GHz model, and 320GB on the 2.53GHz. Both of these hard drives run at 5,400 rpm, but you can opt to increase the speed to 7,200 rpm if you choose. There’s also a 128GB solid-state drive available.

The environment

Apple’s innovations continue with the MacBook Pro’s environmental credentials. Traditionally, laptop manufacturers have used brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in logic boards; PVC in cables; arsenic in glass components; and mercury in the CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlights of LCD monitors. Apple has successfully eliminated these toxins from the new MacBook Pro.

Apple has also worked hard to ensure every aspect of the design and manufacturing process considers environmental impact. As a result, the new MacBook Pro reaches the gold standard of EPEAT (electronic product environmental assessment tool). EPEAT measures the way in which a product affects the environment; the amount of energy it consumes; and the ability to recycle its parts. A gold rating is proof of Apple’s ecological commitment.

The new MacBook Pro also meets the exacting standards required to give it Energy Star status. In fact, the MacBook Pro uses just 33% of the electricity needed for one light bulb.

A high calibre product

The new 15 inch MacBook Pro has a range of exceptional features as well as industry-leading improvements in technology and green standards. With the unibody, it also has a remarkable design concept. Put all these innovations together, and you have a truly superior laptop.

disgo dv3 video camera review

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
pjmattf asked:

I just bought a small and very cheap (£30) video camera, so here’s a quick review I produced with it.

According to PC World’s website, it’s the “Disgo DV3 1GB SD Camcorder”, according to the packaging it’s just “Disgo Video”. What appears to be almost exactly the same thing (except it’s got a white front, not black) is sold by Maplin as the “Busbi Digital Video Camcorder”.

It shoots 320×240 video (30fps), fixed-focus, no zoom, very minimal controls. Comes with a 1gb SD card which will fit just over an hour. The video files produced are AVI files using MJPEG compression, audio is mono 12kHz ADPCM.

Editing was done with the included ArcSoft VideoImpression software.

Kodak Z1085 IS – 10MP Camera Review #2

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
seboyd2000 asked:

View it in High Def: http://www.vimeo.com/seboyd2000

In tested this camera, I’ve owned a few of the (newer/low cost) Kodak Easyshare products and my favorite camera to this point is the Z1275. Upon arrival of Z1085-IS from Amazon (my cost $179), I noticed the camera packaging seemed to be a little off and things shook inside the box, even though the box was sealed and undamaged. Normally all products from Amazon have been good for me, including 3rd party products that I’ve ordered.

I un-packaged the camera and loaded the included battery, then did a quick setup on date, picture size, etc. A great thing about this camera is it can use all types of AA batteries, rechargables are probably the best and longest lasting,

Next I tried video recording… (this video came out to 49MB in a .mov file format). But I decided to covert it to a .divx file using Dr. Divx and it dropped the size down to 14MB and uploads quicker to VIMEO.com and saves me space on my account here. Dr Divx seem to convert it over and upheld the HD quality… what do you think?

Notes:
——-
I noticed the audio seems to record a little low in volume.
Videos always go blurry when using the zoom adjustments.

Buying A Digital Camera To Replace Your Old Film Camera

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
I’m very conservative when it comes to buying myself new “toys”. I don’t buy every new gadget that comes out, but when I do buy – I get the latest technology and the highest quality I can afford. That way my investment holds its value for a long time and I’m not tempted to replace it so soon.

I didn’t buy a digital camera when they first came out. All you could get were 1 megapixel models with no optical zoom capability. Maybe a good replacement for the cardboard throwaways you get at the supermarket, but I much preferred the quality images I got from my (now 20 year old) Nikon 35mm SLR film camera.

When I finally did buy a digital camera a few years ago, I picked up a slightly used 2.1 megapixel from Olympus digital camera with a 3x autofocus optical zoom. At the time, it was as good a value as you could get when buying a digital camera, but technology being what it is – it’s now considered a midrange consumer level camera.

Well, while I’m still satisfied with my Nikon film-based camera, I’ve been thinking about buying a new digital camera for a few months now. That’s because I’ve seen the amazing shots that my friends have taken with their cameras, and I want to be able to get the same results. In addition, I’m using my 35mm SLR much less these days just because it’s so much more convenient to use my digital camera, and I’ve got a bag full of film that I’ve never found the time to have developed. It’s finally time to buy a new digital camera to actually replace the 35mm camera.

Towards that end, I’ve been reading online guides and digital camera reviews to catch up on exactly what to look for when buying a digital camera. This research is very helpful, as I evaluate which cameras are easy to use, produce high-quality photos, come packed with features, and are the best bargains. In fact, these resources make the task of buying a digital camera easier than I imagined it would be.

Since I’ve been doing all this research beforehand, I’m ready to make my purchase now that I’ve decided that buying a digital camera is the right move for me. I’ve read about people getting fantastic bargains from online stores, so that’s where I’ll look first. I also read store reviews as part of my research into buying a digital camera, so I know which websites were trustworthy and which ones to avoid. As a result, I’ll be able to complete my purchase without a single problem.

Now that I’ve made the decision, I really can’t remember what was preventing me from buying a new digital camera a long time ago! I can’t wait to get it so I can play around with the settings, and try out the different features that are available on these newer digital cameras. If you ask me, this is the way photography was meant to be.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a digital camera, I recommend that you go ahead and do it sooner rather than later. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to take pictures with this kind of equipment and how much better the pictures turn out.

Why Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS is so Cool – GPS Review

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Kim Peter asked:

A GPS depends on radio communication with complicated integrated circuits and a LCD display. These products have flooded the market everywhere and it seems like they are the latest craze in the gizmos arena.

But frankly this craze of ours is not just a love for latest gadgetry as is usually the case, rather I would say that the popularity of these GPS devices is based on the fact that these GPS devices are extremely useful in so many ways

So let’s make an attempt to explain it to a technology novice guy about GPS functionality? How does a GPS works? Well to me I would describe it as a group of satellites and a bunch of related ground stations that are communicating with each other and passing information between GPS and this network of space satellites.

This is a simple definition. Other thing that includes a GPS system involves a lot more namely software, hardware circuitry, communication protocols, a process of some kind for assigning addresses and so on but it is out of the scope of this article.

Ok, enough of GPS technology, here’s my Garmin 305 review I am going to cover few features of Garmin forerunner 305 and mention some cool uses of this GPs device. Since GPS now a days are going off the road meaning we are using GPS navigational devices for different purpose like hiking in the woods, trekking, on the boats, bike trails and soon. I am pretty sure one of the very popular navigational device which is suited for such outdoor purpose off the beaten path is Garmin’s 305 Forerunner. Now take a look at forerunner 305 Garmin features that I really love.

A must have for runners:

Most Runners will love this GPS device simply because the Forerunner 305 provides real-time data to help keep them on track, and on target. Another thing to consider is that it allows them to keep a tab on their heart rate (a useful feature for people with heart problems) speed but also the distance traveled and stuff like calories burned – a really useful feature for weight watchers (very important to some of us.) For the serious users, they may also like feature like customize training for fitness needs and to download training courses, sounds fun to me!

Go more high tech with Garmin’s Forerunner 305:

A very important feature technology wise that sets the Forerunner 305 GPS apart from other GPS navigational devices is that it utilizes new technology that enables it to function properly even under heavily covered areas and indoors. This is a cool feature as lot of GPS devices are void of this feature and in my opinion is really helpful feature.

Forerunner 305 makes you competitive and helps in boredom:

To avoid boredom while running and for those who need a little competition you can find some competion with the Garmin’s Forerunner 305. You can compare your time with other runners on the same track. Also, you may choose to take part in a virtual race with competitors on the same path without ever seeing their eyes in the shadow of defeat. So it actually serve as a great motivational tool also for novice runners who would love to get some help and provides some real-time competition in order to keep pace.

What about battery life in forerunner 305:

With all new devices comes the issue of battery life. Battery life in forerunner 305 device is up to 10 hrs when excluding the heart rate monitor. What do you think? Because this should be more than sufficient for most runners. I am sure there will not be many who would need more than that. I expect most runners should find it sufficient for several trips or workout. Those who will be charging the device on regular basis should not worry about running out of juice.

How to Know Your Digital Camera Type

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Roberto Sedycias asked:

Photography is one of the most popular hobbies of many people around the world. Almost every individual with a camera creates his own world of pictures, least bothering the types of camera he is using. Most of the digital camera users have little or no idea on the configuration of the gadgets they have. Some people purchase digital cameras without caring to figure out what type of digital camera will best serve their purpose.

However, professional photographers know their needs pretty well in this regard. But it is wise for anyone to know the type of digital cameras before investing in one of them. Digital camera has many advanced features that the traditional cameras lack. But if you go through the minute details of each type of digital cameras you will find them differing from each other in their features and functionality.

Compact digital camera:

Generally, a regular sized digital camera is smaller in size. But if you are opting for a compact digital camera you will find them as portable as to keep them in your pocket or small purse. They are also available with LCD monitors with sensor image stabilization, dust reduction, wireless remote controller and image resolution quality. The LCD monitor shows the view of the picture to be taken and hence, helps capturing perfect images.

The image sensor tends to catch dirt and debris. But the dust reduction system removes dirt from it. The image stabilization mode of the digital camera sharpens the image by eliminating camera shake. The portable and lightweight digital camera with multiple features varies in its price depending on its features.

Point and Shoot digital camera:

Digital cameras of this category do not need a lot of creativity on the part of the user and therefore, are good for any user. It is easy to use and have many controls that don`t need much of your involvement while taking the snaps. The powerful camera has compositional technology which can be wonderfully used not only for photography but also for video taping, paining and some of the other visual media.

Though the camera has its limitations like lack of flexibility, you still can capture your memories with great pictures if you are smart to use the compositional technology. It is the best digital camera for the beginners. As any other digital camera they are also small light weight and the picture can be viewed on the screen before taking it.

Digital SLR camera:

A digital SLR camera is a digital camera with single lens reflex system. It has got a small mirror between the lens and camera films. The technology of this high-end camera creates more image control and focusing for the photographer. Also, this type of digital camera is developed with mega pixels. The number of pixels present is responsible for the clarity of picture.

Advanced digital camera:

The advanced digital cameras have got some advantages over the basic digital cameras. This type of digital camera is available with fully automatic, manual or semi-automatic control. The astounding digital camera captures amazing images with ease of handling. The extremely simple interface allows the user easily understand its functionality. The advanced LCD screen, megapixels and optical zoom makes the advanced digital camera feasible for professional and personal use.

Before taking your digital camera you can go through some reviews that give clear picture of every type of camera, its feature and functionality. Ask some of the digital camera owners about the pros and cons of the models they own. Try out many models of digital cameras before you settle down for the right digital camera for your purpose. Happy Buying!!!

Rear Projection HDTV: Good Enough

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Art Gib asked:

HDTVs have changed the face of television viewing. The HV’s possess a screen, which can match the size of projectors, and movie screens. And not just that, but they also include crystal clear pictures and Dolby Digital 5.1 stereophonic sounds, apart from the mammoth flat and wide screen. The types of HDTV’s are also varied, ranging from CRT and DLP to LCD and Plasma HDTV. A large number of leading TV manufacturers have also produced many interesting models. Many competitors like Samsung, Sony and Pioneer continue to one up each other with amazing picture quality and sleek design.

Being the number one electronics manufacturer in the world, Samsung has managed to gain a lot of market share and also become the official HDTV of the NFL. HDTV being a drastic launch from the ordinary television sets, they are seen as quite beyond the reach of the usual customer. But makers are trying to downscale the prices to accommodate everyone. The rear-projection TV (RPTV) is made with such an aim. These models are based on DLP technologies as developed by Texas Instruments. The particular model mentioned above includes TI’s latest chip designed on the lines of DLP, yielding better pictures at the same time. This model is one of the very first to use the new HD3 .55-inch micro-display of TI. It has a reduced chip size and a resultant cheaper cost of the chip. Large manufacturers takes into account four factors to determine the standard of the display performance which are contrast ratio, grayscale linearity, RGB color response and color temperature linearity. These factors significantly help towards ensuring that the display is able to distinguish between the subtleties in colors.

If you are an impule shopper or hate spending hours researching TV’s, sticking to a brand name manufacturer is probably your best bet. If you are a more picky shopper, you will want to visit various HDTV review websites to determine which one will be best for your home. You can choose between rear projection (which is usually cheaper) or you can go all out for a LCD or Plasma flat panel which will cost you more but typically have a better picture.

Although the picture of a rear projection HDTV isn’t quite as impressive, you may notice that you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars for the same size TV over a LCD or Plasma flat panel. For the average TV watcher, a rear projection is usually leaps and bounds above your old CRT monitor.
